## Biography

John Seale is an Australian cinematographer. Born on 5 October 1942 in Warwick, Queensland, he began his career in Australia collaborating with director Peter Weir as a camera operator and director of photography.

Seale gained international recognition working on films including *Witness* (1985), *Rain Man* (1988), *Dead Poets Society* (1989), *The English Patient* (1996), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, *The Talented Mr. Ripley* (1999), *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone* (2001), and *Mad Max: Fury Road* (2015). He received further Oscar nominations for *Witness*, *Rain Man*, *Cold Mountain* (2003) and *Mad Max: Fury Road*. He directed one feature, *Till There Was You* (1990).

Seale is a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society and the American Society of Cinematographers. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2002 for services to the arts.
