## Biography

John Van Druten was an English playwright, theatre director and screenwriter. Born in London in 1901, he read law at the University of London and briefly practised as a solicitor before turning to writing. His first play was performed in 1924.

He achieved success on the London and New York stages with works including *Young Woodley*, *Old Acquaintance* and *The Voice of the Turtle*. Van Druten moved to the United States, where he became a citizen, and wrote screenplays including the 1944 adaptation of *Gaslight*. He also directed many of his own plays and others such as *The King and I*.

Among his best-known works are the plays *I Remember Mama*, *Bell, Book and Candle* and *I Am a Camera*, the last of which was adapted into the musical *Cabaret*.
