John W. Harkrider was an American costume designer and art director. Born in Abilene, Texas, he began his career designing costumes for Broadway productions in the 1920s, including the original 1927 staging of *Show Boat* and the 1928 production of *Whoopee!*.

In film, Harkrider contributed to several 1930s productions. He worked on costumes for *Swing Time* (1936), specifically the 'Bojangles' sequence, and held positions at MGM and Universal, where he served in a dual capacity as art director and costume designer from 1934 to 1938. He died in Los Angeles County, California, in 1982.
