John Wexley was an American playwright, screenwriter and author. Born in New York City in 1907, he first gained prominence with his prison drama *The Last Mile*, a Broadway hit in 1930 that was later filmed twice.

He moved into screenwriting in Hollywood, contributing to films including *The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse* (1938), *Angels with Dirty Faces* (1938), *Confessions of a Nazi Spy* (1939), *Hangmen Also Die!* (1943), *Cornered* (1945) and *The Long Night* (1947). His career ended after he was blacklisted following testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. In later years he wrote the book *The Judgment of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg* (1955).
