## Biography

Johnny Byrne was an Irish television screenwriter and script editor. Born in Dublin, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1956 and began his career writing poetry and short stories before turning to television in the 1970s.

He wrote eleven episodes of *Space: 1999* (1975) and served as script editor on its first series. Byrne contributed three stories to *Doctor Who* (1963): *The Keeper of Traken* (1981), *Arc of Infinity* (1983) and *Warriors of the Deep* (1984), and created the character Nyssa. He wrote 29 episodes of *All Creatures Great and Small* (1978) and episodes of *Tales of the Unexpected* (1979).

Byrne created the long-running series *Heartbeat* (1992), writing 23 episodes, and *Noah's Ark* (1997). He died in Norwich, Norfolk, in 2008.
