## Biography

John Waldo Green (10 October 1908 – 15 May 1989) was an American songwriter, composer, musical arranger, conductor and pianist. He studied at Harvard University and began his career writing popular songs in the late 1920s, including the jazz standard "Body and Soul".

Green worked extensively in Hollywood from the 1930s, serving as head of music at MGM from 1949 to 1958. He received Academy Awards for his work on the film scores of *Easter Parade* (1948), *An American in Paris* (1951), *West Side Story* (1961) and *Oliver!* (1968), as well as for producing the short film *The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture* (1953). He also adapted, orchestrated and conducted the music for *Oliver!*, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.
