We rate him most when another actor can push back; the intensity is reliable, but it needs something to work against. In *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* (2026), Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle gives Peter someone worth disagreeing with. Their dispute over violence is allowed to stand, and Bernthal earns his place among guest stars who otherwise make the film longer without making it more interesting. We were glad of that discomfort: the two men have a reason to be in a scene together beyond the pleasure of recognising them. It is a useful way to cast an actor whose aggression is most interesting when somebody challenges it. His breakthrough came as Shane Walsh in *The Walking Dead* (2010–2012), and hard-edged men have remained central to his work. A supporting part in *The Wolf of Wall Street* (2013) showed how much he could do with limited screen time. Frank Castle followed in *Daredevil* (2016) and *The Punisher* (2017–2019), where brutality had to coexist with recognisable hurt. Lee Iacocca in *Ford v Ferrari* (2019) offered a useful change: authority without violence. *HIS & HERS* (2026) gives him a less rewarding assignment as Detective Jack Harper, opposite Tessa Thompson's Anna Andrews. Both actors make the history between these people felt, but the six-part mystery keeps moving on to another suspect instead of letting their relationship develop. Bernthal helps make it watchable in stretches; he cannot make the characters' increasingly implausible decisions convincing. The disappointment is specific: there is enough feeling between the leads to sustain our attention, yet the programme keeps asking us to care about its next misdirection. We would not recommend it simply because he is in it. The recurring risk is that sheer intensity becomes the whole performance; some of his early work leant heavily on it. More screen time is not necessarily the answer, as the difference between Castle's guest appearance and Harper's longer assignment suggests. He needs writing that gives another actor a credible reason to stand up to him, or a relationship worth staying with. We would welcome more parts that ask for Iacocca's authority and leave the violence out. ## Biography Jon Bernthal is an American actor.
