## Fi1m on Jon Favreau

> Jon Favreau gives funny people room to be awkward, selfish and worth knowing. We like his films best when he trusts those people; his digital animals and franchise adventures can be expertly made and dramatically thin.

In *Swingers* (1996), Jon Favreau’s Mike Peters struggles to keep up with Vince Vaughn’s confidently talkative Trent. We felt protective of Mike because Favreau makes that effort so plainly visible. His screenplay understands how friends can turn encouragement into pressure, and director Doug Liman keeps the affection apparent even when the slang becomes tiresome. That patience with people is still the most persuasive reason to watch his work.

Directing *Elf* (2003) and *Iron Man* (2008), he found larger settings for the same interest in performers. Will Ferrell gets to play Buddy’s sincerity without apology, while Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark is allowed to enjoy being clever. Gwyneth Paltrow gives Stark someone who will resist his charm, and editor Dan Lebental leaves room for their exchanges. The thin story in *Elf* and the routine fighting in *Iron Man* matter, but neither cancels the pleasure of the company.

*Iron Man 2* (2010) repeatedly leaves Stark to introduce people needed for later instalments, although Favreau and cinematographer Libatique make the Monaco attack unusually easy to follow. Writing, directing and starring in *Chef* (2014) marked a return to smaller-scale work. His supporting performances also show how useful he can be without much fuss. As Happy Hogan in *Spider-Man: Homecoming* (2017), he ignores Peter’s texts and supplies a funnier link to the wider franchise than Stark’s visits do.

The move towards lifelike digital creatures produces sharply different results in *The Jungle Book* (2016) and *The Lion King* (2019). The former has a boy’s wish to belong and Bill Murray’s agreeably workshy Baloo, though the songs sometimes interrupt the danger. The latter’s lions barely change expression; editors Adam Gerstel and Mark Livolsi keep cutting to herds when a reaction is needed. Zimmer’s score must supply feelings that the faces cannot, and technical skill is no compensation.

Creating *The Mandalorian* (2019), Favreau found a useful television rhythm in bounty-hunting assignments, despite leaving the man behind the mask underwritten. *The Mandalorian and Grogu* (2026), co-written with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, repeats the hunts without building a satisfying middle. Editors Rachel Goodlett Katz and Dylan Firshein keep individual encounters clear, but the accumulation is forgettable. For the most rewarding introduction, start with *Swingers* or *Iron Man*.
