## Biography

Jonathan Asser is a British writer. His debut feature screenplay was for the prison drama *Starred Up* (2013), directed by David Mackenzie and starring Jack O'Connell. The film draws on Asser's twelve years working as a therapist in the prison service, where he developed a form of group therapy for violent offenders known as shame/violence intervention.

Prior to screenwriting, Asser published the poetry collection *Outside the All-Stars*. *Starred Up* received several awards, including Best British Newcomer at the 2013 BFI London Film Festival, the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for Best First Screenplay, and two British Academy Scotland Awards. Asser has projects in development including the feature *Pretty* and the television series *Flush*.
