## Biography

Jonathan Harshman Winters III (1925–2013) was an American comedian and actor. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he began his career performing stand-up comedy after working in radio and television in Ohio. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Second World War and studied at the Dayton Art Institute.

Winters appeared in numerous films and television programmes. His film roles include Lennie Pike in *It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World* (1963) and Norman Jonas in *The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming* (1966). He provided voice work as Papa Smurf in *The Smurfs* (2011) and *The Smurfs 2* (2013), and as various characters in animated series including *The Flintstones* (1994) and *Tiny Toon Adventures* (1990).

He received two Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 1999.
