## Biography

Joseph A. Valentine (born Giuseppe Valentino) was an Italian-American cinematographer. He began working in films in the 1920s after training in photography and became a chief cinematographer in 1924. He worked initially at Fox Studios before moving to Universal, where he was under contract from 1936 to 1946.

Valentine photographed several notable films including *The Wolf Man* (1941), *Saboteur* (1942), *Shadow of a Doubt* (1943) and *Rope* (1948), the last three for Alfred Hitchcock. He received five Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and won in 1949 for *Joan of Arc* (1948). He died of a heart attack in 1949.
