## Biography

Joseph Cawthorn was an American stage and film actor. He began performing as a child, debuting in 1872, and appeared in minstrel shows and vaudeville before working in British music halls and American touring companies. He made his Broadway debut in the late 1890s and had a stage career spanning over two decades, with roles including Boris in *The Fortune Teller* (1898) and Dr. Pill in *Little Nemo* (1908).

In 1927 Cawthorn moved to Hollywood and appeared in more than fifty films until 1942. His screen credits include Gremio in *The Taming of the Shrew* (1929), Dr. Bruner in *White Zombie* (1932), Schultz in *Gold Diggers of 1935*, Dr. Ziegfeld in *The Great Ziegfeld* (1936) and Herr Schuman in *Naughty Marietta* (1935). He was married to actress Queenie Vassar from 1902 until his death.
