## Biography

Joseph E. Levine was an American film producer, distributor and financier. Born in Boston, he began his career as an exhibitor of foreign films before moving into distribution and production through Embassy Pictures, the company he founded.

He was responsible for the American releases of *Godzilla, King of the Monsters!* (1956), *Hercules* (1959) and *Attila* (1955), and produced or financed *Contempt* (1963), *The Graduate* (1967), *The Lion in Winter* (1968), *Carnal Knowledge* (1971) and *A Bridge Too Far* (1977). Levine died in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1987.
