## Biography

Joseph White Farnham (also credited as Joseph W. Farnham, Joe Farnham and similar variants) was an American screenwriter, playwright and film editor active from the late 1910s to 1930.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, he began working in film through connections with theatre impresarios and went on to write titles and scenarios for numerous silent films, including *The Big Parade* (1925). He edited *Greed* (1924) and contributed to MGM productions such as *The Unknown* (1927).

Farnham was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. At the first Academy Awards in 1929 he won the sole award given for Best Writing – Title Cards, based on his work across multiple films that year. He also wrote skits for *The Hollywood Revue of 1929*. He died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in 1931.
