## Biography

Joseph Fretwell III (1915–1992) was an American costume designer. He was born on 19 September 1915 in Anderson, South Carolina, and died there on 5 November 1992.

He began working in theatre in the 1940s, with Broadway credits including costume design on *The Rat Race* (1949) and *The Traitor* (1949), and assistant roles on several other productions. From the 1960s he designed costumes for numerous New York-based television series, including 49 episodes of *N.Y.P.D.* (1967–1969) and *Coronet Blue* (1967).

His feature film work includes *The French Connection* (1971), *Across 110th Street* (1972) and *The Exorcist* (1973).
