## Biography

Joseph Janni (1916–1994) was an Italian-born British film producer. Born in Milan, he studied at Milan University and the Rome Film School before emigrating to Britain in 1939. He formed his own company, Vic Films, and produced his first feature, *The Glass Mountain* (1949), which he co-wrote.

In the 1960s Janni became closely associated with the British New Wave through his partnership with director John Schlesinger. Their collaborations included *A Kind of Loving* (1962), *Billy Liar* (1963), *Darling* (1965), *Far from the Madding Crowd* (1967) and *Sunday Bloody Sunday* (1971). He also produced Ken Loach’s first feature, *Poor Cow* (1967). Janni received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture for *Darling*.
