## Biography

Joseph M. Newman was an American film director. He began his career as an assistant director at MGM, receiving Academy Award nominations in the now-defunct Assistant Director category for *David Copperfield* (1935) and *San Francisco* (1936).

Newman directed the science fiction film *This Island Earth* (1955). He later directed episodes of television series including four instalments of *The Twilight Zone* (1959) and ten of *The Alfred Hitchcock Hour* (1962). He also directed *711 Ocean Drive* (1950) and several westerns and other features.

Newman served as a major in the US Signal Corps during the Second World War. His credits span from the 1930s to 1965.
