## Biography

Joseph Strick (1923–2010) was an American director, producer and screenwriter. Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania, he served as a cameraman in the US Army Air Forces during the Second World War. After the war he began his career with the short documentary *Muscle Beach* (1948), co-directed with Irving Lerner.

Strick directed and produced literary adaptations including *The Balcony* (1963), *Ulysses* (1967), *Tropic of Cancer* (1970) and *A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man* (1977). He produced the experimental documentary *The Savage Eye* (1960) and the feature *Never Cry Wolf* (1983). His short documentary *Interviews with My Lai Veterans* (1970) won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. He also directed for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.
