He taught drama at Carlmont High School in the 1970s before beginning his acting career. His first credited film role was as a prison guard in *Escape from Alcatraz* (1979).

Whipp is known for supporting roles in horror films directed by Wes Craven, including Sergeant Parker in *A Nightmare on Elm Street* (1984) and Sheriff Burke in *Scream* (1996).
