Born in New York City, she was educated at Holy Cross convent school and began her career in the chorus of Broadway productions including *Good Morning Dearie* at age 14 or 15. She appeared in nearly 20 stage shows, among them the *Ziegfeld Follies*, before being discovered by a talent scout and attending the Paramount Pictures School in 1926. Her first film role came in *Fascinating Youth* (1926). Dunn starred in numerous silent films and was named a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1929. She transitioned to sound pictures with roles including one in *Our Modern Maidens* (1929) and a co-starring part in *Safety in Numbers* (1930). She played Mademoiselle Martel in Ernst Lubitsch's *One Hour with You* (1932).
