## Fi1m on Josh Hamilton

> Josh Hamilton makes ordinary friendliness worth watching closely. We rate his work in *Reality* particularly highly: he lets an apparently reassuring man become frightening without changing his manner or asking us to notice how much acting is involved.

In *Reality* (2023), Josh Hamilton’s Agent Garrick asks about a dog while a team searches the house. He has dogs himself, and he talks about them with the ease of someone filling an ordinary lull in conversation. The questioning moves to a bare back room with a dirty carpet, but his manner stays pleasant. We were unsettled by that persistence, because Hamilton gives Sydney Sweeney’s Reality no obvious change of tone to respond to. There is no reassuring moment when the friendly preliminaries clearly end.

Hamilton had an early lead as Grover in Noah Baumbach’s *Kicking and Screaming* (1995), then built much of his screen career in supporting parts and ensembles. His credits include Research Tech in *The Bourne Identity* (2002) and Mark Day in *Eighth Grade* (2018). The convincing paternal presence in the latter helps explain why Garrick’s friendliness works: Hamilton looks comfortable being the adult others might rely on. In *Reality*, that comfort is available to the man asking the questions, and rather less to the person answering them.

Tina Satter gives him a useful constraint: *Reality* follows the questioning word for word, leaving no room for an explanatory speech. Hamilton keeps Garrick sociable, while Marchánt Davis’s Agent Taylor stands mostly to one side, takes notes and says less. The pressure does not require either actor to shout. Cinematographer Paul Yee stays close to Sweeney’s face, letting us watch her work out what the men already know. Hamilton’s performance works within that attention to her; he does not need the film to stop and inspect him.

The film’s flourishes are less convincing than these exchanges; Hamilton is already doing the necessary unsettling work. We would not use every supporting credit as evidence of the same achievement: our appreciation of *The Long Walk* (2025) rests chiefly on Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson. Garrick, though, is central to why *Reality* works, despite Sweeney remaining its focus. Start with *Reality*, and watch how little Hamilton has to alter his manner to make a friendly question uncomfortable.
