> Josh Radnor gives idealistic men enough warmth to keep us listening when they explain themselves. We like his steadiness in an ensemble, though scripts that demand sympathy for him can make that patience wear thin.

Josh Radnor's Ted Mosby wants his romantic disappointments to matter, and Radnor makes it possible to care without quite persuading us to worry. In *How I Met Your Mother* (2005), he is an agreeable centre for a romantic sitcom that sometimes mistakes persistence for importance. We warmed to him, then felt our patience slipping whenever the writing insisted on the significance of Ted's search for love. The distinction matters, because Radnor has to keep this man sympathetic while the script keeps asking for sympathy on his behalf. His warmth does useful work, even when the writing gives it too much to do.

Beside him, Jason Segel's Marshall Eriksen and Alyson Hannigan's Lily Aldrin have a more relaxed way of being good company.
