## Biography

Joy Carlin is an American actress and director. Born on 1 April 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, she graduated from the University of Chicago, attended the Yale School of Drama, studied with Lee Strasberg in New York and has roots in Chicago’s Second City improv scene.

She has worked extensively in the San Francisco Bay Area as a member of the company at American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.), where she served as associate artistic director, and as interim artistic director at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. She has acted and directed at theatres including Aurora Theatre Company, Marin Theatre Company, TheatreWorks and Shotgun Players. Her screen credits include the role of Woman on Plane in *Blue Jasmine* (2013), Laura’s Mother in *Smooth Talk* (1985) and an uncredited part in *Dirty Harry* (1971). She is married to Jerry Carlin and they have three children.
