## Biography

Jule Styne was a British-American songwriter and composer. Born Julius Kerwin Stein in London on 31 December 1905, he moved with his family to Chicago as a child and studied at the Chicago Musical College. He began his career writing songs in the 1920s and later worked in Hollywood as a vocal coach and composer before turning to Broadway.

Styne collaborated with lyricists including Sammy Cahn, Leo Robin, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Stephen Sondheim, and Bob Merrill. His best-known stage scores include *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* (1949), *Bells Are Ringing* (1956), *Gypsy* (1959), and *Funny Girl* (1964). The 1968 film adaptation of *Funny Girl* used his music. He received an Academy Award for the song "Three Coins in the Fountain" (1954) and a Tony Award for *Hallelujah, Baby!* (1967). Styne died in New York on 20 September 1994.
