## Fi1m on Julia Garner

> Julia Garner makes small reactions count: a raised shoulder, a delayed smile, a voice kept flat. We rate her watchfulness and the anger beneath it, though scripts that ask her only to look worried waste her.

In *The Royal Hotel* (2023), Julia Garner listens to men laughing at a joke her character, Hanna, has not been allowed to share. Kitty Green holds on her while she decides whether to smile, and we felt ourselves tense at that small calculation. Garner keeps her shoulders raised and her eyes on the exits; Jessica Henwick's Liv sees the same company as harmless fun. That difference gives Garner's watchfulness something to work against, rather than leaving her to look worried for an hour.

Her feature debut was *Martha Marcy May Marlene* (2011), but the breakthrough came as Ruth Langmore in *Ozark* (2017–2022). Ruth combined force with insecurity, qualities that recur in Garner's work. The lead in Green's *The Assistant* (2019) depended on physical restraint and little dialogue. Green's patience suits her: it gives us time to notice each small adjustment.

Zach Cregger's *Weapons* (2025) gives her watchfulness a sharper temper. As Justine, a teacher treated as guilty after children disappear, she is tight, jumpy and drinking in her car. Garner lets anger show underneath the fear, so that being innocent does not make Justine agreeable. Cregger's chapter-by-chapter telling grows predictable, but her performance supplies a human reason to stay with the mystery.

The limitation is clearest in Leigh Whannell's *Wolf Man* (2025), where her Charlotte is married to Christopher Abbott's Blake. Their early arguments give us little sense of a shared life, and Charlotte is defined largely by her job and her frown. Once the trouble begins, the script leaves her waiting for someone else's change. We would not recommend it for Garner; the part gives her too little to do.

Matt Shakman's *The Fantastic 4: First Steps* (2025) finds a better use for her stillness. Her Silver Surfer announces the planet's destruction in a flat voice, and for a few minutes the threat feels serious, though the film cannot sustain that dread. Start with *The Royal Hotel* for a fuller account of what she can do, with fair warning that its ending is less assured than its first hour.
