## Fi1m on Julia Louis-Dreyfus

> Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes self-importance funny without asking us to like the person displaying it. We value her quickness and physical precision, but she needs scripts that give her more than the same joke to repeat.

In *Thunderbolts\** (2025), Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine treats her own impeachment as a problem for the diary. We laughed at the way she reduces a threat to her position to an administrative nuisance. She gives this CIA director enough confidence to make the response seem perfectly reasonable to the person delivering it. Louis-Dreyfus is good at letting a character be ridiculous without standing apart from her to point out the joke.

That quick-witted, physically expressive comedy has had more room on television. Elaine Benes in *Seinfeld* (1989–1998) established her, followed by leading roles in *The New Adventures of Old Christine* (2006–2010) and *Veep* (2012–2019), where she played Selina Meyer. These long runs matter because her comedy rewards familiarity: we get to know the person doing the reacting, rather than simply wait for the next line. Larry David and Armando Iannucci are among her collaborators, and she benefits from writing that gives a character more to do than repeatedly demonstrate how sharp she is.

*Thunderbolts\** is a useful warning about what happens when the writing settles for that. Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo’s script gives Louis-Dreyfus the same three notes to play, and the pleasure diminishes as they recur. Florence Pugh carries the film, while Valentina remains an enjoyable supporting part whose writers could have asked more of their actor. Louis-Dreyfus keeps the character amusing, but cannot disguise how little new material she has been given. We find the film worth an evening, but would not send anyone to it first for Louis-Dreyfus.

The quieter films suggest where else to look. *Enough Said* (2013) gave her a major film lead as Eva, while *You Hurt My Feelings* (2023), in which she plays Beth, makes room for low-key, dialogue-led acting with emotional weight. Her collaboration with director Nicole Holofcener is worth following alongside the television work. Start with *You Hurt My Feelings* if Valentina has left the impression that sharpness is all she offers.
