## Fi1m on Julie Christie

> Julie Christie can show several feelings at once without stopping to explain any of them. We value her most in *Don't Look Now*, where her urgency and tenderness make a grieving marriage painfully convincing.

In *Don't Look Now* (1973), Julie Christie's Laura Baxter wants contact with the child she has lost, and Christie makes that need urgent enough to carry the supernatural story. She and Donald Sutherland are convincing as a couple with a shared history. Their closeness does not mean they face their grief in the same way. We were moved by the tenderness of their love scene, because neither actor lets us mistake physical closeness for recovery.

Her breakthrough came with *Billy Liar* (1963), followed by the lead in *Darling* (1965) and international stardom with *Doctor Zhivago* (1965). Some early assessments treated her looks as more persuasive than her acting, a judgement that makes little sense beside Laura Baxter. Her move towards more selective work brought Robert Altman's *McCabe & Mrs. Miller* (1971), where her contribution to the dialogue helped make Constance Miller convincing. It is a useful companion to Roeg's film for anyone inclined to mistake her apparent ease for a lack of thought.

Nicolas Roeg's fractured storytelling sometimes labours its warnings, but Christie never plays Laura as someone put there to supply a clue. She gives the longing for contact enough force to keep us concerned with Laura herself, even while the film encourages us to hunt for explanations. Sutherland makes John's resistance understandable too, so neither actor reduces the disagreement to a matter of who is right. Roeg gets the best from Christie by allowing that difficulty to remain. We can believe in their affection and still see why being together is not enough to make this loss bearable.

*Afterglow* (1997) returned her to a leading dramatic part after a period of selective work, while Sarah Polley's *Away from Her* (2006) drew on her ability to convey vulnerability and conflicting feelings. Across those later performances, her subtlety leaves room for feelings that do not neatly agree with one another. Start with *Don't Look Now*, and give the marriage as much attention as the mystery.
