## Biography

Julio Alejandro was a Spanish screenwriter. He wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for several films directed by Luis Buñuel, including *Nazarín* (1959), *Viridiana* (1961), *Simon of the Desert* (1965) and *Tristana* (1970). He contributed to more than eighty films between 1951 and 1984.

Born in Huesca, Aragón, he trained as a naval officer, served in the Rif War and later worked in the Spanish Ministry of the Navy during the Second Republic. After the Spanish Civil War he lived in exile in the Philippines and Mexico before returning to Spain late in life. He also wrote poetry and plays. He died in Jávea, Valencia, in 1995.
