## Biography

Julius J. Epstein (1909–2000) was an American screenwriter. With his identical twin brother Philip G. Epstein he formed a writing partnership that began in the late 1930s and produced numerous screenplays for Warner Bros. Their most celebrated work was the screenplay for *Casablanca* (1942), written with Howard Koch and based on an unproduced play; the trio received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Epstein graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1931. Early credits included *Four Daughters* (1938), for which he received an Oscar nomination, and collaborations such as *The Strawberry Blonde* (1941), *The Man Who Came to Dinner* (1941) and *Yankee Doodle Dandy* (1942). After Philip’s death in 1952, Julius continued writing alone, with later credits including *Send Me No Flowers* (1964), *Cross of Iron* (1977) and *Reuben, Reuben* (1983), the last of which earned him another Oscar nomination.
