## Fi1m on June Squibb

> June Squibb makes blunt dialogue sound like something a person has needed to say for years. We rate her for the familiarity and fatigue beneath the rudeness, especially when the writing would settle for an easy laugh.

Kate Grant does not wait patiently for people to explain themselves in *Nebraska* (2013). June Squibb gives her complaints the force of someone who has heard quite enough already. We laughed at her outbursts because Squibb makes the exhaustion behind them so recognisable. She can make a line rude without making the speaker seem ridiculous, and that matters in a film whose rural jokes sometimes come too easily. It is the performance that best explains why we rate her: Kate sounds as though she has been living with these people long before the film arrived.

Her early screen work gave her less room, beginning with Hilda in *Alice* (1990) and continuing through supporting parts in the following two decades. Alexander Payne first cast her as Helen Schmidt in *About Schmidt* (2002), opposite Jack Nicholson. Squibb supplies the believability we want from a supporting actor. We found Payne's retirement comedy uneven, particularly when it reached too readily for jokes about the people around Warren Schmidt. With Squibb, the risk is particularly clear: a blunt supporting character can become someone the film merely asks us to laugh at.

Payne gives her a fuller opportunity in *Nebraska*, as Woody's wife, but the temptation is still there. Some of Kate's rude lines are pushed too hard, with the writing expecting us to find her funny simply because she lacks manners. Squibb makes us hear how well she knows the people she is complaining about. The fatigue in her delivery keeps Kate from becoming a collection of reliable punchlines. Her comic timing works because she lets the impatience tell us something about this particular woman, rather than relying on the novelty of an older woman saying something impolite.

*Thelma* (2024) gave her a first leading role in a feature, playing a grandmother seeking revenge after a scam. Another lead followed in *Eleanor the Great* (2025). We welcome the chance to spend longer with her, though a larger part does not necessarily make better use of an actor. Start with *Nebraska*, and listen to how much of Kate's marriage Squibb gets into a complaint.
