> Justin Fletcher has voiced a sheep who never says a word since 2007, and the measure of the job is that you do not notice him doing it. He brings a slapstick comic's timing to Aardman's flock and asks for no credit in return.

Shaun the Sheep does not talk. Neither does Timmy, nor the pigs. What they do is bleat, gasp, grunt and sigh, and every one of those noises since the series began in 2007 has come out of Justin Fletcher. It is an odd job for an actor. The face does the joke, the animators put the timing in, and the voice arrives afterwards to confirm what you have already understood. In *Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom* (2026) we laughed out loud four or five times, and each time it was a face rather than a sound that did it, Timmy's among them. That is not a complaint. The bleat you notice is the bleat that has gone wrong.

He came to Aardman from children's television, where he had been since the late 1990s, voicing characters in *Tweenies* and building slapstick roles of his own. *Something Special* (2004), the CBeebies series he developed, uses Makaton signing so that children with special educational needs can follow it, and it is the flagship of everything he has done for that channel; *Gigglebiz* and *Justin's House* followed. He has said he grew up on "endless reels of Laurel and Hardy, Chaplin, Keaton", and the line from those films to a mute sheep is short. A small figure with a fixed expression stands still while the world falls on him. Fletcher has been doing that in person for pre-school audiences for two decades; Shaun lets him do it in a woolly jumper.

Three features have followed the series: *Shaun the Sheep Movie* (2015), *A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon* (2019) and *The Beast of Mossy Bottom* (2026), with John Sparkes beside him as the Farmer and Bitzer throughout and Mark Burton writing and directing two of them. What works is the consistency. Shaun sounds like Shaun across nineteen years and three films, which is harder than it looks and is never rewarded, because nobody leaves a cinema saying the sheep was well bleated. What limits him is the same thing. The part has a ceiling, and it is the animation. When the film is a long episode of the programme, as we found *Mossy Bottom* to be, the voice is a long episode too. Our biggest laugh in that film came from Bitzer's ears dropping a beat after the rest of him had understood bad news, which is Sparkes's character and the animators' timing, not Fletcher's.

The only reservation anyone has managed to raise about him is that he has stayed in pre-school television, and it is a strange thing to hold against a man who is plainly good at it. If you have small children you know his voice better than some of your relatives'. If you do not, you will hear it in the next Shaun film, and you will not notice, and he will have done his job.

Justin Fletcher is an English actor, voice artist and children's television presenter. Born on 15 June 1970 in Reading, Berkshire, he trained at the Guildford School of Acting.

He is best known for voicing the characters Shaun and Timmy in the *Shaun the Sheep* television series from 2007 and its feature films, including *Shaun the Sheep Movie* (2015), *A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon* (2019) and *Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom* (2026). Fletcher also created and presents the CBeebies series *Something Special* (2003–), in which he performs as Mr Tumble, and has appeared in other CBeebies programmes such as *Justin's House*.
