## Fi1m on Kate Hudson

> Kate Hudson's warmth can make us forgive a film too much. We value her most when a part asks for more than charm, and in *Song Sung Blue* her dry, practical kindness is worth the film's troubles.

Kate Hudson takes the harmonies and the between-song patter in *Song Sung Blue* (2025), and makes both sound like work she knows how to do. As Claire Sardina, she keeps Hugh Jackman's Mike from drifting too far into his dreams of a Neil Diamond tribute act. There is pleasure in watching her be practical without making the woman dour. The bad wig helps: Hudson lets it look bad rather than asking us to admire her underneath it.

That warmth was already doing important work in Cameron Crowe's *Almost Famous* (2000), her breakthrough as Penny Lane. She makes the musicians' company seem worth joining, which matters in a film built around a boy's enthusiasm for them. Crowe sometimes forgives these people too readily, and Hudson's charm helps him get away with it. She also lets Penny Lane seem vulnerable, enough to make us care about her beyond her value as good company.

Romantic-comedy leads followed through the 2000s, with *How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days* (2003) establishing her in that work. Her physical energy and comic timing were useful assets, and easy things to ask an actor to repeat. Being cast repeatedly as charming, free-spirited women left less room for dramatic parts. Later supporting parts include Birdie Jay in *Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery* (2022).

Craig Brewer gives her a useful partner in Jackman in *Song Sung Blue*: their singing sounds rehearsed in a garage, not tidied for a studio. Scott Bomar keeps the accompaniment sounding like a bar band, while Amy Vincent shoots the stages warmly against the cold Milwaukee streets. Those choices suit Hudson's unshowy performance, letting the act feel local and the pleasure in singing feel credible. We were moved more than we expected when she sang alone, because she made a borrowed song express what Claire could not say plainly to the man beside her.

Brewer's film still piles on more misfortune than it can make us feel, and Hudson cannot repair that by being good in it. Her dry kindness is the reason to stay, even as the script wears down our patience. Give her more women with songs to sing and bills to think about, but perhaps fewer disasters in one sitting.
