She appeared in 44 films between 1930 and 1951, including *The Barretts of Wimpole Street* (1934) as Arabel Barrett, *Death Takes a Holiday* (1934), *Stage Door* (1937), *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* (1939), *In Name Only* (1939), *Dance, Girl, Dance* (1940) and *Now, Voyager* (1942). She was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and died in Tryon, North Carolina, on 10 January 1981. Alexander trained as a violinist before entering the theatre; she made her Broadway debut in 1924 and became a leading lady on stage. Her film career began in the early 1930s. She was married to William A. Brady Jr from 1926 until his death in 1935; they had one daughter, Barbara.
