A child actress from Wallsend, North Tyneside, Proctor had no previous acting experience when cast in the film at the age of 12. She was encouraged to audition by a teacher at her school. Proctor attended the film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and appeared on BBC Breakfast to promote its UK release.
