## Biography

Ken Balcomb (1940–2022) was an American cetologist and marine biologist. He founded the Center for Whale Research in 1984 and conducted long-term studies of the Southern Resident orca population in the Pacific Northwest, beginning in 1976.

Balcomb appeared as himself in the documentary *Blackfish* (2013). He contributed to other films and television programmes on whales and marine life, including *The Whale* (2011) and episodes of *The Nature of Things*.

He was born in Clovis, New Mexico, and died near the Elwha River, Washington.
