## Biography

Ken Hughes (1922–2001) was a British film director and screenwriter. Born Kenneth Graham Hughes in Liverpool, he began his career at the BBC as a sound engineer before directing his first feature, *Wide Boy*, in 1952. He went on to direct and write more than 30 films between 1952 and 1981.

Hughes is best known for directing *Casino Royale* (1967), one of five directors on the film; *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang* (1968), which he also co-wrote; and *Cromwell* (1970). His other credits include *The Trials of Oscar Wilde* (1960) and *Night School* (1981). He received a Primetime Emmy Award and three BAFTA nominations.
