## Fi1m on Ken Kwapis

> Ken Kwapis is at his best with an ensemble making life difficult for one another. We rate his feel for character comedy, though the *Malcolm in the Middle* reunion shows how easily his work can get bogged down in explanations.

Let Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek be difficult in one another’s company and Ken Kwapis knows what to do. The strongest passages of *Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair* (2026) depend on that willingness to let actors get on with it. We find this reunion funny enough to justify the visit, despite its crowded storytelling. Kwapis is a good director of ensemble comedy, and the pleasure here comes from people who know how to irritate one another.

His early television work included episodes of *The Larry Sanders Show* (1992); on *Malcolm in the Middle* (2000), he became a regular contributor, directing 19 episodes. For *The Office* (2005), he directed the pilot, returned for further episodes and also directed the finale. Those credits help explain his standing: establishing how a cast works together and sustaining it are substantial directing jobs, even when the results look unforced. His preference for naturalistic performances suits comedy in which the relationships need to remain credible while the behaviour becomes unreasonable.

He has kept features alongside television, including *The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants* (2005) and *He’s Just Not That Into You* (2009). Coming-of-age stories and ensemble romantic comedy give him opportunities to attend to several characters without making everyone behave alike. The feature work can be conventional, and capable handling of actors does not automatically make a familiar story interesting. We would start with the television ensembles for a sense of why his contribution matters, rather than expect the features to settle the question.

The revival makes the limitations clear enough. Kwapis directs all four episodes, but that continuity cannot cure the feeling of too much material being squeezed into the run. We laughed at the family friction, with Cranston and Kaczmarek making difficult company enjoyable to watch. Malcolm’s explanations of what his childhood has done to him are less rewarding, and the attempts to discuss the harm behind the comedy become laborious. Go to this reunion for the performers, and allow some patience for Malcolm’s need to explain.
