He joined the Labour Party in the late 1960s and became Leader of the Greater London Council in 1981, serving until the council's abolition in 1986. He was Member of Parliament for Brent East from 1987 to 2001 and served as Mayor of London from 2000 to 2008. Livingstone has appeared as himself on numerous television programmes, including multiple episodes of the panel show *Have I Got News for You* beginning in 1990. He has also portrayed versions of himself in scripted series such as *Snakes and Ladders* (1989), *Faith* (1994) and *Trevor's World of Sport* (2003).
