## Fi1m on Kevin Chapman

> Kevin Chapman plays men who are not sure which side of the law they are on. In *Person of Interest* he carried the jokes while his crooked cop turned, over five seasons, into a decent one. Elsewhere he is the Boston face at the edge of the frame.

Kevin Chapman takes orders like a man who has already worked out how they end. In *Person of Interest* the man in the dark suit tells Lionel Fusco to lose a file or lie to his lieutenant, and Chapman receives each instruction with a sag of the shoulders and a look that weighs being shot against being fired. He is a big man with a Boston voice in a New York precinct, and the only person on that show who seems to have a mortgage. Everyone else is a ghost or a machine. Fusco wants lunch.

He came to the part late. Chapman did not start acting until his late thirties, after years as a doorman and a stand-up comedian, and the stand-up shows in how he handles a laugh line: he throws it away, as anyone who has done ten minutes to a hostile room learns to. Ted Demme cast him in *Monument Ave.* (1998), then came *Mystic River* (2003), where he plays Val Savage. Our review does not mention him; his job there is to be one more face in the neighbourhood, and he does it well enough to disappear. *Brotherhood* (2006) gave him a main part as the mob boss Freddie Cork; *Person of Interest* gave him 103 episodes.

Chapman has said that it is not the actor's job to decide whether a character is a good man doing bad things or the reverse; the audience should judge. The detective is crooked when we meet him, blackmailed into helping, and Chapman never plays a scene that asks us to forgive him. He plays fear as grumbling and decency as an inconvenience, and lets the change come so slowly that we could not say which episode it arrived in. Midway through the run we noticed that he was the one person on the show we did not want to see shot, and that surprised us, because nothing he had done had asked for it. The series belongs to Michael Emerson, but a good deal of its warmth is Chapman's.

Being that useful means he is rarely asked to be anything else. Casting directors see the build, hear the accent and reach for the enforcer, the mob figure or the officer who took an envelope, and Chapman has played all three until the surprise is gone. *Brotherhood* is the one time he was handed the centre of the frame; we have not reviewed it. *CODA* (2021) has him as Brady, a supporting part in a family drama, back at the edge of the picture where most of his work gets done.

If you want to see what he can do, give Fusco the full five seasons; the change is slow and worth the wait. If you want to see how little he needs, watch *Mystic River* again and try to notice him.
