> Kevin Conroy gave Batman two voices, and the quieter one, Bruce Wayne's, did most of the acting. Over thirty years in the part he made a cartoon vigilante sound like a man in mourning, and he never raised his voice to do it.

There is a moment in *Batman: Mask of the Phantasm* (1993) when Bruce Wayne stands at his parents' headstone in the rain and asks to be let off. He has met someone and did not expect to. Kevin Conroy's voice thins to almost nothing on the word "happy", and the man who elsewhere in the film speaks in a flat, dropped voice is, for a minute, a boy asking permission. It is the best thing he did in the part and it is also typical of it. Conroy gave the character two voices, one warm and slightly hesitant for Wayne, one dropped a register and flattened for Batman, and the acting lives in the space between them.

He had never done voice work before. Trained at Juilliard, he spent the late 1970s and the 1980s in theatre and live-action television, in *Tour of Duty* and in soaps, and arrived at *Batman: The Animated Series* in 1992 with the Adam West programme as his only reference and a sensible actor's objection to the premise. He told Bruce Timm that the disguise would not fool anyone, and offered a fix: "Maybe I could use a slightly different voice." He took the idea from *The Scarlet Pimpernel*, and he was the first voice actor to play the part that way. The bat voice is the one people imitate. The Wayne voice is the one that did the work.

The part then occupied thirty years. There were the direct-to-video films, the games, an older Wayne in *Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker* (2000), a late outing in *Batman: The Killing Joke* (2016), and a live-action appearance in *Batwoman* (2019) that divided people, who found the man darker and more despairing than the one they had grown up with. What critics kept noticing across all of it, that his Batman was grim but grounded in grief and kindness rather than mere menace, is exactly what we heard in *Phantasm*.

The limit is real and worth naming. The Batman voice is a fine instrument for one note; it can threaten and it can go quiet, and beyond that it does not have far to travel, which is why the films that let Wayne speak are the ones that last. His best foil was Mark Hamill, whose Joker across dozens of projects gave Conroy something to be still against. We were moved more than we had any right to be by that graveyard scene, and we were moved because nobody raised their voice and Shirley Walker's score dropped to a single piano line under him.

Start with *Phantasm*. It is 76 minutes, it is the Batman film most interested in Bruce Wayne, and it is the clearest account of what Conroy could do with a microphone and a drawing that sometimes moved more stiffly than he did.

## Biography

Kevin Conroy (1955–2022) was an American actor. He trained at the Juilliard School and began his career in stage productions and television series such as Tour of Duty before moving into voice work.

He became best known for voicing Batman, beginning with the lead role in Batman: The Animated Series (1992). Conroy reprised the character in the theatrical film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) and numerous subsequent animated series, films and video games in the DC Animated Universe, including Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000), Justice League: Doom (2012) and Batman: The Killing Joke (2016). He continued voicing the character across more than three decades until his death.
