## Fi1m on Kevin Doyle

> Kevin Doyle plays men of small standing, footmen and shift workers, and lets what they want show through slowly. In *Sherwood* that patience turns a scorned man's decency into something that hurts to watch, and it is the work we would send you to.

Fred Rowley in *Sherwood* (2022) worked through the miners' strike, and decades on his street has not forgiven him. Kevin Doyle plays him heavy and slow, a man who decided long ago not to argue his case, and the effect is that the insults thrown at him land on us instead. We bristled on his behalf more than once, which is not something we expected to feel for the man who kept going to work while the strike went on around him. Doyle does it with weight rather than pleading. Fred does not ask to be liked, and so we like him.

He has been circling that kind of part for a long time. He trained at Guildhall from 1978, spent the early 1980s in regional and RSC theatre, and broke through on television as John Parr in *The Lakes* (1997). A decade of guest and recurring work followed, and then *Downton Abbey* (2010), in which he played Julian Fellowes's footman Joseph Molesley for five years and two films and became a face people knew without always knowing the name.

Molesley is the template. A man of low status with a quiet ambition that comes out over time, and Doyle is good at the long game, letting insecurity turn into something like confidence across years rather than scenes. He is funny, too, in the small-key way that suits a servant who cannot afford to be seen being funny. Then Sally Wainwright cast him as DS John Wadsworth in *Happy Valley* (2016) and the same slow, watchful quality went somewhere much darker. Critics noticed the turn, and it is the part we would like to see him given more often. Writers who let him take his time get the best of him; James Graham gave him time in *Sherwood*, and it shows.

The reservation, such as it is, is that he is still best known for one long-running supporting role, and a footman at that. He has said he "would hate to have a career where I played the same part forever", and *Happy Valley* and *Sherwood* are the answer to that, along with a stage career he has never put down. He is not a star and does not act like one. He is the man at the edge of the frame you find yourself watching while the leads are talking, and sooner or later someone will have the nerve to give him the middle of it.
