We rate him as an ensemble actor who can handle broad silliness and unsettling material, without needing the programme to belong to him. Kevin Eldon often appears as the eccentric or unusually intense man in an ensemble comedy. We like the willingness to be odd: a supporting performer should be able to unsettle a scene rather than merely help the lead through it. His association with the surreal British comedy of the 1990s and 2000s makes sense, as does his effectiveness in darker material. The danger is that a succession of small parts encourages us to recognise the face and stop paying attention to the acting. *Fist of Fun* (1995), with Stewart Lee and Richard Herring, gave him an early television breakthrough and characters including Simon Quinlank. In *Big Train* (1998), he was a key member of the sketch ensemble. That format suits a performer whose eccentricity need not be softened into someone we want to follow for a whole evening. *It's Kevin* (2013) eventually gave him a sketch series of his own, after years in support. Getting his own programme does not make those earlier parts any less worth watching. In *Spaced* (1999), his role is simply Agent, while Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes carry the comedy about being young and broke. It is a funny, affectionate programme, and the performances are why we recommend it despite Edgar Wright occasionally overworking the film references. This is the sort of company in which we most value Eldon, among performers with distinctive comic personalities. We would rather stay with those performers than have another reference pointed out. *Hot Fuzz* (2007) gives him Sergeant Tony Fisher in Wright's village police comedy, again within a cast led by Pegg, this time alongside Nick Frost. We laughed at Pegg and Frost's village policing because the jokes are sharp without making the affection seem false. Our enthusiasm comes with a caveat: repeated gags and overextended action make it longer than it needs to be. There are stretches where we would happily lose another gag to get the film moving. Start here, then try *Big Train* for Eldon working in a sketch ensemble. ## Biography Kevin Eldon is an English actor and comedian. He played Mike Sampson in the 1997 series *I'm Alan Partridge* and an agent in the 1999 series *Spaced*. He appeared in several British comedy series of the 1990s, including *Fist of Fun*, *Big Train*, *Brass Eye* and *Jam*. Later credits include roles in *Hot Fuzz* (2007), *Four Lions* (2010) and *Nighty Night* (2004). Eldon began performing stand-up comedy in the early 1990s and collaborated with Stewart Lee on *Fist of Fun* and related projects. He was born in Chatham, Kent. *Sources: en.wikipedia.org, imdb.com.* ## On Fi1m (22) - *3 Body Problem* (2024), Fi1m 65, as Sir Thomas More — [page](https://film.one/tv/3-body-problem.md) - *The Chelsea Detective* (2022), Fi1m 70, as Roy Colin — [page](https://film.one/tv/the-chelsea-detective.md) - *Trigger Point* (2022), Fi1m 60, as Jeff Washington — [page](https://film.one/tv/trigger-point.md) - *Six Minutes to Midnight* (2020), Fi1m 47, as Sergeant Simmons — [page](https://film.one/film/six-minutes-to-midnight.md) - *Johnny English Strikes Again* (2018), Fi1m 52, as MI7 Night Duty Agent — [page](https://film.one/film/johnny-english-strikes-again.md) - *Utopia* (2013), Fi1m 83, as Tony Bradley — [page](https://film.one/tv/utopia.md) - *Arthur Christmas* (2011), Fi1m 82, as Elf (voice) — [page](https://film.one/film/arthur-christmas.md) - *Hugo* (2011), Fi1m 76, as Policeman — [page](https://film.one/film/hugo.md) - *Four Lions* (2010), Fi1m 94, as Sniper — [page](https://film.one/film/four-lions.md) - *Dead Set* (2008), Fi1m 77, as Joplin — [page](https://film.one/tv/dead-set.md) - *Hot Fuzz* (2007), Fi1m 84, as Sergeant Tony Fisher — [page](https://film.one/film/hot-fuzz.md) - *Skins* (2007), Fi1m 72, as Manfred — [page](https://film.one/tv/skins.md) - *Saxondale* (2006), Fi1m 75, as Martin — [page](https://film.one/tv/saxondale.md) - *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory* (2005), Fi1m 64, as Man with Dog — [page](https://film.one/film/charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory.md) - *Nathan Barley* (2005), Fi1m 74, as Nikolai the Barber — [page](https://film.one/tv/nathan-barley.md) - *Green Wing* (2004), Fi1m 83, as Scissors Bentley — [page](https://film.one/tv/green-wing.md) - *Nighty Night* (2004), Fi1m 82, as Terry Tyrrell — [page](https://film.one/tv/nighty-night.md) - *Look Around You* (2002), Fi1m 83, as Tony Rudd — [page](https://film.one/tv/look-around-you.md) - *Black Books* (2000), Fi1m 82, as Cleaner — [page](https://film.one/tv/black-books.md) - *Spaced* (1999), Fi1m 86, as Agent — [page](https://film.one/tv/spaced.md) - *Brass Eye* (1997), Fi1m 86, as Prison Officer — [page](https://film.one/tv/brass-eye.md) - *I'm Alan Partridge* (1997), Fi1m 88, as Mike Sampson — [page](https://film.one/tv/im-alan-partridge.md) ## Complete filmography (133) Every credit, newest first.
