## Fi1m on Kevin Hart

> Kevin Hart is funniest when his rapid delivery makes panic comic. We rate his timing, but repetitive vehicles wear it down, and his underused turn in *Borderlands* is a poor argument for setting the comedy aside.

Kevin Hart talks fast and makes anxiety physical, often opposite a co-star who looks rather harder to knock over. The anxious, out-of-his-depth character suits his timing: a reaction can be the joke without stopping the scene. We value that comic precision, though familiar reactions cannot do all the work of building a character.

Supporting comedy parts, including *The 40 Year-Old Virgin* (2005), gave way to leading roles with *Think Like a Man* (2012). The buddy films made useful casting sense: *Ride Along* (2014) paired him with Ice Cube, and *Central Intelligence* (2016) with Dwayne Johnson. The later shift towards more action-oriented work brought *Lift* (2024) and *Borderlands* (2024).

*Borderlands* gives him a more serious action role as Roland and does little with him. Eli Roth's film leaves his comic abilities largely unused. We were bored by the muddled shootouts, and frustrated that Hart had been given so little comedy to relieve them. Hart need not be funny in every part, but a departure from comedy needs a character worth playing. Roland belongs to an underwritten company whom the film never makes convincing as a group.

Cate Blanchett at least makes Lilith's readiness to fire a gun seem deliberate. Her commitment brings occasional energy to Roth's action, which makes the waste of Hart more noticeable. Jack Black, voicing Claptrap, is similarly short of chances to use his comic abilities. Keeping these performers together does not make their characters feel close, and Hart cannot supply the missing connections through energy alone.

The reservation about his comedy is repetition: rapid delivery and alarm are easy to recognise, and too often asked to carry another familiar vehicle. Hart's timing remains a reason to watch, provided the writing gives those reactions somewhere to go. We would start with *Ride Along*, where the pairing with Ice Cube makes proper use of his comic contrast. For another serious action role, we would want a character with more to him than Roland.
