His first credited film role was as Biff Loman in *Death of a Salesman* (1951), for which he received a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He is best known for portraying Dr. Miles J. Bennell in the science fiction film *Invasion of the Body Snatchers* (1956). McCarthy appeared as Dr. Frank Simmons in the *Columbo* episode 'Requiem for a Falling Star' (1973). He also had roles in films including *Gremlins* (1984) and *Innerspace* (1987), and worked extensively in television and on stage.
