## Fi1m on Kim Dickens

> Kim Dickens makes capable women interesting without pretending that capability solves their troubles. We particularly value her in ensembles: *Deadwood* and *Gone Girl* benefit from an actor who suggests feeling beneath practical authority.

In *Gone Girl* (2014), Kim Dickens makes a detective's competence a pleasure to watch. As Rhonda Boney, she gives David Fincher's thriller a practical, no-nonsense presence alongside the persuasive performances of Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. We found her steadiness reassuring, because the film's marital suspicion leaves so little else to settle on. The plotting gets far-fetched, and Dickens cannot make all of it plausible, but she gives us good reason to keep attending to the investigation. She is worth noticing even when the film offers plenty of reasons to look elsewhere.

*Deadwood* (2004) gives her more complicated work as Joanie Stubbs, a madam whose authority does not tell us everything about her. This was her television breakthrough after supporting film parts in the late 1990s, and it remains our strongest recommendation from her work. David Milch's Western spends as much care on people trying to live together as it does on violence, and Dickens suits that interest in the difficulties of everyday life. She makes Joanie credible at work while allowing feelings beyond the immediate business to matter. Ian McShane is the conspicuous attraction, but Dickens is part of what makes the ensemble worth spending so much time with.

The move towards television gave that supporting presence a sustained place in her career. In David Simon's *Treme* (2010), she plays the chef Janette Desautel; *Fear the Walking Dead* (2015) puts her in the lead as Madison Clark. Those parts extend a pattern of women with responsibilities, rather than simply repeating the detective or the madam. We would not reduce her appeal to resilience, though it is easy to see why she is cast that way.

There are limits to what this kind of acting can repair. *Gone Girl* sometimes needs its cynicism questioned more firmly, and *Deadwood* lets elaborate speeches run beyond our patience. Dickens is a reason to stay with both, though our preference is for the longer acquaintance with Joanie. Start with *Deadwood*, provided a Western in which people talk at length sounds like an invitation rather than a warning.
