Born on 6 July 1964 in Seoul, he began his career as a theatre actor and director before making his feature-film debut with the self-written and directed comedy *The Quiet Family* (1998). His subsequent films include the horror *A Tale of Two Sisters* (2003), the crime thriller *A Bittersweet Life* (2005), the Western *The Good, the Bad, the Weird* (2008), on which he also served as producer and co-writer, and the action film *I Saw the Devil* (2010).
