Kimberly Elise is an American actress. She was born Kimberly Elise Trammel on 17 April 1967 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She earned a BA in Mass Communications from the University of Minnesota and attended the American Film Institute as a Directing Fellow.

Elise made her feature film debut in *Set It Off* (1996) and received critical acclaim for her performance in *Beloved* (1998). She has appeared in films including *John Q* (2002), *The Manchurian Candidate* (2004), *The Great Debaters* (2007), *Dope* (2015), *Almost Christmas* (2016), *Death Wish* (2018) and *Ad Astra* (2019), as well as the television series *Close to Home* (2005–07) and *Hit the Floor* (2013–2016). She is a four-time NAACP Image Award winner and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for *Woman Thou Art Loosed* (2004).
