## Fi1m on Kit Harington

> Harington plays men who take duty seriously and are tired by it, and in *Game of Thrones* that made him the still point of the biggest thing television has attempted. Out of armour the record is patchier, and *Industry* is the most promising entry in it.

Watch Harington for any length of time and you notice how little he does with his face. The brow comes down, the mouth sets, and he waits. He has been cast again and again as the earnest young man with a duty he did not ask for, and his method is to hold still and let the strain show through rather than act it out. It is a narrow way of working. Within its limits he is unusually good at it.

He came to it early. His professional debut was on stage, as Albert Narracott in *War Horse* (2009), and two years later he was Jon Snow, the part he would play for eight seasons of *Game of Thrones* (2011). Our review found no weak link in that cast, and he was not one; the last thirteen episodes hurry, and it shows, but that was not his doing. We will own that across those years he moved us more than the writing always earned, mostly by looking, whenever the plot handed him another job, like a man who would rather have refused it and knows he will not. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss built the show around bigger talkers. He was the one who listened.

The film work has been uneven. *Pompeii* (2014) made him an action hero, a job he has since said he more or less fell into, and most critics were unconvinced. *Testament of Youth* (2015), as Roland Leighton, was better: an intimate period piece that wanted vulnerability rather than a sword, and he had it. He has voiced a part across the *How to Train Your Dragon* films, appeared in *Eternals* (2021), and with *Gunpowder* (2017) played his own ancestor, Robert Catesby, in a drama he helped create and produce, which tells you where his interests lie. The stage keeps drawing him back, to *Henry V* (2022) and *Slave Play* (2024), and the reviews so far for *A Tale of Two Cities* (2026) have been cool.

The most interesting thing he has done since Westeros is Henry Muck in *Industry*, which he joined in 2024. It is a contemporary part, no armour, and the show is sharp enough about ambition to give his stillness somewhere to go. We scored it 76 and found the performances the most reliable thing in it. The change in the kind of man he is playing is the point, and it suits him.

He once said, "I am not always going to play swords and horses." He then played Henry V, which is swords and horses with better lines. We do not think that is a contradiction. The frown of a man who would rather not has always been his best face; what *Industry* suggests is that it works as well in a suit as under a fur collar.
