## Fi1m on Klaus Wennemann

> Klaus Wennemann’s weary chief engineer helps make the crew of *Das Boot* believable as men at work. We value that grounded acting, while recognising that the film gives some of those men too little individual character.

In *Das Boot* (1981), Klaus Wennemann’s chief engineer has the submarine’s technical operations to oversee, and he carries the weariness of the job into the part. He is reserved and convincing, an actor who helps us accept that these men know how to work together. We were gripped by the crew’s predicament because that sense of shared work made them worth worrying about. Wennemann contributes to it without needing the prominence that Jürgen Prochnow has as the captain.

That credibility does not remove our reservation about Wolfgang Petersen’s film: the men are unevenly developed. Wennemann and Herbert Grönemeyer’s Werner belong to a convincing working group, but several individuals remain easier to identify by their duties than by their personalities. Prochnow supplies much of the dramatic weight, and he cannot give everyone else an inner life. A little more distinction among the crew would have made the anxiety more personal.

The engineer was his film breakthrough, but television subsequently gave him a sustained leading role. In *Der Fahnder* (1984–1993), he played the unconventional detective Faber for more than 90 episodes, becoming widely recognised in Germany. The move from a submarine crew to the centre of a crime series is the important change in how audiences encountered him. His film work also includes Heinz in *Abwärts* (1984), a lift thriller alongside Götz George.

We would start with *Das Boot*, where our recommendation is firm despite the uneven characterisation. There is no need to promote Wennemann over Prochnow to make a case for his value. His engineer’s competence helps the submarine feel like a workplace, which is essential if its danger is to mean much. Watch it for the crew as well as the captain, and do not expect to know every man equally well.
