## Biography

Kōgo Noda (野田高梧) was a Japanese screenwriter. Born on 19 November 1893 in Hakodate, Hokkaidō, he died on 23 September 1968.

He is best known for his long collaboration with director Yasujirō Ozu. They co-wrote the screenplays for many of Ozu’s films, including *Sword of Penitence* (1927), *Late Spring* (1949), *Early Summer* (1951), *Tokyo Story* (1953), *Equinox Flower* (1958), *Floating Weeds* (1959), *Late Autumn* (1960), *The End of Summer* (1961) and *An Autumn Afternoon* (1962). Noda co-wrote thirteen of Ozu’s fifteen postwar films.

After joining the script department at Shōchiku following the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, he became one of the studio’s central screenwriters. When the Writers Association of Japan was formed in 1950, Noda served as its first chair.
